OBJECTIVE: To obtain a position where, using both traditional scholarship and new technologies, I can help to build a learning community.

 

EDUCATION:

·         Ph.D. in German and Intellectual History awarded 1983; SUNY Buffalo (4.0 QPA).

·         M.A. in German; SUNY Buffalo (3.81 QPA).

·         B.A. in Philosophy and English; University of Chicago. 

 

PUBLICATIONS:

·         Have published or had accepted seven books of scholarship, one memoir, three study guides, three chapbooks of poetry, one reference book, and two books of translations (See record of publications).

·         Two of the scholarly books have been named to list of “outstanding academic titles of the year” compiled by the journal Choice.

·         Have had books published in Japanese, Czech, French, Korean and Turkish translation.

·         Have published over 200 shorter pieces including articles, poetry, sections of reference books, research reports, translations, reviews, and flyers for public distribution.

 

Work Experience:

December 2005 - present: Adjunct member teaching Philosophy at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

September 1999 - January 2006: Director of Online Research, Development and Training, Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, NY.


June 2003 to present: Adjunct faculty member at the University Without Walls of Skidmore College.

June 1997 - July 2002: Instructor at the New York Botanical Garden.

June 1993 - December 1999: Coordinator of the Yonkers Center for Independent Learning at Mercy College.

June 1985 to present: Adjunct professor at Mercy College in English and Philosophy.

Sept 1999 - May 2002: Taught undergraduate and graduate courses in humanities and ethics at Metropolitan College, New York City.

June 1982 - June 1992: Adjunct professor at Pace University as Adjunct Full Professor of German (promoted 1986, 1989, 1992).

June 1996 - December 2000: Taught creative writing via the Internet for America Online.

June 1976 - December 1989: Worked as a volunteer, paid consultant and regional coordinator for several human rights organizations including Amnesty International and Helsinki Watch.

 

 

WORK IN ONLINE LEARNING

·         Founded the famous Wizards Program of online supplemental instructors at Mercy College.

·         Won a Sloan-C Award for “Online Learning Effectiveness” in 2002.

·         Listed as a Consultant on Online Learning by the Sloan Consortium and by the firm Nitron Advisors.

·         Founder of H-OEH, devoted to online education in the Humanities.

·         Have served as an evaluator for grants in online learning including a grant for over $1,000,000 to the Sloan-C headquarters at Olin and Babson College.

·         Co-chair of Sloan-C initiative on faculty training in Summer 06 Institute.

·         Published many articles on online learning in journals such as JALN and Teaching and Learning.

·         Guest editing a special issue, devoted to storytelling and higher education, of the journal On the Horizon.

 

SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS:

·         Have been an invited speaker at The Hastings Institute, the Staten Island Zoo, the National Zoo of the Smithsonian, the Rockwell Museum, Lehman College, the New York Botanical Garden, Rutgers University, Duke University, Yale University, University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois, the Whitechapel Gallery and many other institutions (see record of speaking engagements).

·         Have appeared on the Television program Nova in a program entitled “Spies, Lies and Atomic Secrets” (2000) and on the History channel in a program entitled “Rats, Bats, and Bugs.”

 

OTHER HONORS, AWARDS, AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

·         On May 22, 1984, addressed Commission on Security and Cooperation of the United States Congress on independent peace movements in Eastern Europe.

·         Authored a report on East German compliance with the UN Covenants that was presented to the United Nations in Geneva on July 17, 1984.

·         Founder and first President of the non‑profit organization Nature in Legend and Story (NILAS, Inc.), dedicated "to promote understanding of traditional bonds between human beings and the natural world."

·         Featured writer at the Sharing the Words 99 Festival in Treadwell, NY.

·         Received grants from Pace University, NYCH and other places.

·         Listed in Marquis Who’s Who in America, 1999-present; in Marquis Who’s Who in American Education, 2001-present.
