To write when not moved by a sense of wonder has always seemed wrong to me, a bit like sex or marriage without love. I have tried to resist the pressures to engage in such writing, whether that came from professors or editors. At times, especially in graduate school, I had to conceal my passion behind jargon or rhetoric. In writing The Mythical Zoo, more than in any of my other books, I was able to cast off all restraints.
